Y3/4 Lesson 4 (Cycle A): School bag French detectives

With a focus on the written word, pupils read descriptions of school bag items, matching them to the correct images and noting the plural form of the nouns. They then design and write sentences about the contents of an imagined school bag, using the appropriate article and plural noun endings.

Learning objective

  • To read and understand short sentences
  • To create original sentences using a model sentence

National curriculum

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing.
  • Adapt phrases to create new sentences.
  • Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied and how these differ from or are similar to English.

Differentiation

Pupils needing extra support: can use picture cards from last lesson or the labelled pictures from the jumbled words activity as a support. Encourage them to decide which item words might belong with each bag before looking together to try and find the correct label.

Pupils working at greater depth: can be challenged to write a longer content list, appropriately punctuated and with connective ‘et’, and think about including plurals, adjectives of size and/or colour.

Wrapping up

During the week

  • Use page 3 of the Activity: What’s in the bag? for children to design their own ‘what’s in the bag’ logic puzzles.
  • For display – write large labels attached to clear plastic bags pinned to the wall and see if children can add in the correct equipment (or use mini cards for display).
  • Don’t forget to use your classroom instructions. A quick game of ‘Jacques a dit’ will warm you up for a French lesson, or end the day with a bit of French.
